Welcome!

This is the website for hieu 110: The Rise of Europe, with Professor Nancy Caciola.

Please consult the tabs above for links to pages containing information that normally would appear on a printed syllabus: a course description, schedule of readings, information on class policies and assignments, and my office hours and email. I strongly recommend that you read through all these pages at the beginning of the quarter.

The home section of the site will sometimes be updated with announcements, such as the posting of assignments. You can interact with this site by using the comment function: use this feature to ask questions or give feedback if you wish.

The header image is from folio 27 of the Lindisfarne Gospels, a manuscript produced in the late seventh or early eighth century at the Priory of Lindisfarne, located on a small island off the northeast coast of England. The book contains the four gospels of the New Testament and is richly illuminated with gold and costly colored inks. This image is a cropped and re-oriented portion of the first few letters of the Gospel of Matthew: it shows the typical, interlocking forms of early medieval art. The manuscript is held in London at the British Library, Cotton MS. Nero D.IV.
